WELCOME TO RELAXO'S HISTORY OF THE GREENS PAGE

In a nutshell, the Greens is about music. It always was about music, and it always will be about music. Green is an expression of...well, it's the deep expression of something, and it's terribly hard to put your finger on it. You either get it or you never will. For me and Mike, we always got it. Always had it, and I know we always will.

I think the greens were born around 1977 or '78. That was a long time ago and all the details are a little fuzzy. However, I'm pretty sure the first green song ever written was " Mac Payne, You Drive Me Insane ". Our songs were crude in structure and arrangement, but effective none the less. There is little in the way of mementos from the early day of the greens. Some handwritten lyrics are pretty much all that can be found.

The greens really came together as a tighter band of music in about 93 or so.Our music had grown and with it our abilities to express it well. It's certainly worth noting that the early version of the greens only lasted for about five years or so. When the two of us came together much later, we hadn't played together at all in the years in between. This is the part of the greens where the music, and the lyrics, and the playing really came together in a whole new way. New, but still green. When me and Mike decided that too much time had passed us by, we made our minds up to get back to the business of playing the greens. Here is where the story gets interesting.

In the early days ,we were learning our instruments,(guitars primarily, though we were both enthusiastic about all musical instruments) learning music, and learning ourselves. Figuring out where this new music could take us. Our early songs such as,"Greens Lowride Greens", "Bitch", and "Consumer Ed. Greens" were basic and simple. In the years we had grown. Grown as players and equally as writers. Now our songs were taking on new ideas. The first time we were together again, new music was born. Songs like "I can't find it in my heart", were written on the spot and the final version doesn't waver from that first inception much at all.

I remember when Mike handed me a set of lyrics and asked me to put some music to them one night.Normally we either worked together completely on songs, or wrote them alone, then shared them and allowed the other to bring their own ingredients to the peice. This time however, Mike wrote all the lyrics and I wrote all the music. This song turned out to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest songs of our career. The song was "The Hoochie Coochie Song".
